It is unconscionable that the council would even consider the further militarization of the city’s police force at any time, but especially following a year when police nationwide killed more civilians than in any previous year. Combined with record numbers of our neighbors and community members sleeping on the streets of the city every night, and it is clear that the city manager and some members of the council’s priorities are way out of line. Sacramento needs increased funding for social services, not more weapons of war for a police department that already behaves like an occupying force on our streets.
Genuinely curious the value in purchasing a third armored vehicle for our police force? Have there been multiple situations where the Bearcats just couldn’t cut it?
If we’re just spending down CalOES money, can we maybe pay overtime or do something else financially prudent (or even beneficial to the community) with it?
