Good evening Commissioners. I am Serenity Thompson, a resident of District 4. I would like to bring to your attention the unfair de-prioritization of the 20/21 Kinder class for the 4th R program at Crocker-Riverside Elementary School. It is my understanding that every year, Kinder students are guaranteed a spot in the program. This year's Kinders, who started school in September 2020 and will be graduating in June 2021, were not enrolled in the program due to the closure of in-person learning. Now that we are back in school, it is only fair that current Kinders be given their guaranteed spots.
If the issue is due to budget, FEMA monies are available.
While 4th R is accommodating the current Kinders to enroll if there is space, I would like to understand exactly why this specific class of Kinders is being unfairly treated, and why there cannot be flexibility to honor their unique place in the school year, prioritizing them for enrollment no as they would have been 9 months ago.
At Crocker-Riverside 4th R enrollment priority goes to incoming kinders and families who have previously been enrolled. If there is space left over, new families may join. This presents a problem because this past year the kindergarten class was unable to use 4th R, so these families are not considered returning for next year, and no longer being kinders are not given an automatic spot. No one from this year's kindergarten class (unless they have an older sibling already in the system) will be considered for enrollment unless there is space left over after next year's kinders AND returning families enroll. So instead of being placed on the same level as these families (where we would be if we were able to enroll this past year as we had expected to) we have to wait and hope there is room. This seems unfair. I ask you to reconsider this separate treatment and allow this year's kinders the chance to register at the same time and with the same guarantee as next year's kinders. Lisa DeCarlo
