Christina Grout about 4 years ago

My name is Christina Grout, and I am a City of Sacramento Resident along with my husband, daughter, and my mother. The four of us live in Natomas. Three out of the four of us are disabled. My daughter uses a wheelchair.

I am troubled by the lack of wheelchair accessible playgrounds in the City. The loose woodfill surfacing at most parks is not ADA compliant and is impossible for a wheelchair to traverse. Our daughter screams and cries in dismay as she goes down a ramp to literally, nowhere. Her wheels get stuck immediately. She has also nearly tipped forward because of the rough transition between ramps and the playground surfacing. We live within walking distance of three Natomas parks. None of them are accessible for our daughter. Play is essential for child development. It brings communities together, it is an opportunity for recreation and socializing, and builds neurological connections in young developing brains. Disabled children deserve to be included in play.
