Sacramento is taking bold action to address the health and economic fallout from COVID19. Hundreds of businesses owned and operated by Black Americans descended from persons enslaved in the U.S. are at extreme high risk of imminent closure. Thousands of Black American Sacramentans face job and income loss, as well as food, gas and childcare shortages. Prior to COVID19 nearly half of Black Sacramento lived in asset poverty. A recent poll of Sacramento Black owned businesses reveals 90%+ of respondents say COVID19 has negatively impacted their business. Over 200 Black Sacramentans signed a recent petition urging Sacramento to prioritize Black owned businesses for economic relief. Sacramento’s Black American population is dangerously close to economic collapse and must be prioritized as well as specifically targeted for health and economic relief. If Black Americans in Sacramento are not explicitly, intentionally, and specifically prioritized, we will again be left out of the recovery.
