RE: URGENT: Cleanliness and Debris inCounty and City of Sacramento Streets
To Mayor McCarty and Members of the Sacramento City Council / Board of Supervisors, along with Council Member Patrick Kennedy (my district).
I am writing to you today as a concerned resident of Sacramento to express my deep frustration and disgust regarding the current state of our city’s streets. Over the past 7 years, I have silently witnessed a significant increase in trash, illegal dumping, and general debris throughout our neighborhoods and business corridors (ESPECIALLY IN THE SOUTH SACRAMENTO AREA).
Simply put, the current level of filth is unacceptable. Sacramento is the capital of the fifth-largest economy in the world, yet our streets have become an eyesore for Northern California. This is not just a cosmetic issue; it is a matter of public health, safety, and community pride. Piles of refuse attract pests, block drainage, and create a sense of neglect that discourages local investment and tourism.
While I understand the complexities of urban management, the basic service of maintaining clean public spaces must be a priority. I am asking the Council and the Mayor’s office to:
    • Increase Funding for Rapid Response: Bolster the 311 illegal dumping response teams to ensure debris is cleared within 24-48 hours.
    • Enhance Enforcement: Increase patrols and penalties for illegal dumping in known "hot spots."
    • HEAVILY Expand Street Sweeping: Increase the frequency of mechanical sweeping in highly impacted areas.
    • REMOVE: Abandoned vehicles from neighborhoods. We ENOUGH for our lives here in California. There needs to be a resolve so that we can be proud of our neighborhoods and homes.
    • Increase Code Enforcement: Violations need to be addressed. And when did it become NOT Okay for the Sacramento County are to report violations anonymously??
Our community deserves to live in a city that is clean, safe, and welcoming in ALL areas not just the “expensive” ones. I look forward to hearing about the specific steps you plan to take to address this crisis and restore Sacramento’s appearance.

    Sincerely,
    Winonia Turner
