Subject: Workforce Equity in Sacramento Arts

    Good afternoon, Commissioners,

I addressed your commission, in person, last October on the subject of wage equity. As you may know, Event Associates in the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts District handle safety, accessibility, and patron experience—but their positions remain temporary and minimum-wage, despite sold-out shows like Moulin Rouge and The Lion King.

Nearly half of the City’s cultural workforce is temporary, part-time, or seasonal. This undermines the Creative Edge Plan’s promise to support artists, creatives, and a thriving arts economy. There is real impact every day: turnover, lost skills, and strain on venues and audiences. The disconnect is higher up, not at the ground level.

I urge the Commission to move beyond commentary and act. What is the process for addressing this issue? Who is accountable? And how will Sacramento ensure its cultural values are reflected in how cultural workers are treated?

    Thank you.
