The Mayor and Council need to address the elephant in the room: The 18% raise for the Mayor, and 8% for the Council is not "reasonable" by any measure, including the City Charter, so often cited by those who think their hands are tied when it comes to raises for elected official. Further, the make-up and criteria used by the Compensation Commission needs to be closely examined and overhauled. The Commission, as it exists, is an anachronism that doesn't work anymore. Re-directing one's "raise", as some council members have volunteered to do does not address the larger problem. The raises are not merited, and "giving" them to worthy causes in one's district takes money away from the overall budget. At minimum, the staff report suggesting raises needs to be made public at least a month before the Commission meets. There is a reason why scarcely anyone writes or shows up to argue against the raises: the report is put out at the last minute, and often not the same time of the year. This needs to change. Finally, as has been suggested before, no money to non profits until they all submit to a forensic audit, and officers of the non profit adhere to rules governing conflict of interest, including complete transparency in salaries for all employees, including relatives. The Council continues to raise fees for law abiding over burdened tax payers, but seem reluctant to address the devastating deficit which will burden our children and grandchildren.
