I am super excited about this. I think that grocery stores should be a big part of neighborhood serving commercial uses and the city should work to promote getting more smaller grocery stores into place that do not have access to them. Grocery stores are critical for increasing access to resources within neighborhoods. They are also one place almost everyone has to regularly go aside from their jobs and by adding them within walking/biking distance it will allow many more people to go from car light to car free which is needed as parking gets tighter in the coming years. I also think that increasing height is a better option than decreasing open space. Height has much fewer downsides than losing open space. I personally love the look of taller buildings next to shorter ones and having a variance in building heights and I think it is something many people are not use to but would like if they gave it a chance. Though I do think that another option you have in places were space allows it would be allowing developments to have a decrease in front setbacks or open space in turn for adding street trees/increased open space within right of way. For example adding a tree in front of the house in the street parking area, increasing the size of the planter strip in front of the house, adding bulb outs at corners. This could be huge for helping decreasing the width of many wide streets and slowing drivers as well as increasing the tree canopy in the city.
