On the morning of 8/29 a woman on a scooter was flattened by a truck at Alhambra and Folsom Boulevard. This is one of many cases of violent pedestrian / cyclist deaths that have occurred in our city this year. The mayor, city council, and city manager ALL know that this has become a major public safety concern. I applaud the city for the improvements being made to our infrastructure, I see it being built, used, and improving our city. I just wish there was a way for the city to more quickly respond to specific intersections that pose major threats.
In 2021 a single automobile accident occurred at Broadway and MLK. The city responded quickly by spending $60,000 to implement a road diet, separated bike lane, and improved crosswalk paint. I guess I wish the city valued pedestrian and cyclist lives as much as those of single drivers. I'm advocating that the city adopt an Active Transportation Commission into its general fund and use funds somehow to create a way to respond when crisis intersections make themselves known. I'm tired of seeing people flattened by cars on our streets and to have our city do nothing.
