I want to see a citywide push for more neighborhood retail. I think this is the next logical step after missing middle and all the new zoning law changes. I think there should be a push for filling in food deserts with small no parking or parking light grocery stores with housing on top. I think having the housing on top will be important for ensuring that there is enough density in the area to keep the store alive so the amount of housing will need to be unique for each instance. I also think there should be a push to allow garage conversions or adding retail to the front yard like you see throughout midtown. This would help allow many more small businesses to thrive at a time when it is very hard to have a small business. Both of these would do wonders for reducing car trips, providing amenities to neighborhoods, and allowing small business to thrive. But it would also provide a sense of community and place to a neighborhood. Having lived next to a grocery store and been able to plan grocery shopping around my life instead of planning my life around grocery shopping was amazing. I could just hop over and grab ingredients for what ever I was craving that night. I also felt a connection to my neighborhood that I have not felt when my primary mode of transportation is no longer on foot. I think this is an experience that everyone should have the opportunity to have.
