13. Fiscal Year (FY) 2023/24 Proposed Budget for the: Mayor and City Council; Charter Offices; Community Development; Community Response; Convention
and Cultural Services; Finance; Human Resources; Information Technology; Public Works; Utilities; and Citywide and Community Support
File ID: 2023-00474
As a Co-Director of Capitol Creative Alliance, a regional nonprofit arts organization with the mission to champion and inspire the creative community to build a thriving Sacramento region, I am in support of the proposed additional $1.5 million dollars in funding for the Office of Arts & Culture in the City of Sacramento's 2023-24 fiscal year. There are several goals in the Creative Edge plan that our organization is positioned to support, including a robust Creative Economy survey, Earn-and-Learn training programs for creative professionals, Educational Capacity Building for Arts & Cultural Organizations, Creative Job Fairs, Shared Services for the Arts, Iconic Event and Co-Producing Program, a robust Creative Directory, and participating in developing a cultural district. Additional funding to be able to fulfill these goals would be transformational for our organization, and for our community. We serve college students enrolled in art & design programs, college graduates and emerging creative professionals and we are the nexus between education, creativity and industry. By investing in the creative economy and investing in the creative professionals, artists, cultural bearers, and the youth who make Sacramento the vibrant city that it is, you are investing in the city as a whole. We appreciate your continued support of the creative economy, and we look forward to building a future where artists, creative professionals, and cultural practitioners can live, work, and thrive in the city that we call home.
As a Board member of Sacramento Alliance for Regional Arts (SARA) and Executive Director of NorCal School of the Arts, I am expressing my support of the proposed 2023-24 City of Sacramento budget for the Office of Arts & Culture. Thank you for your past commitment and visionary leadership in making historic levels of relief funding available to the sector while understanding how the arts help impact and drive vibrancy to our creative economy. Your support has been a lifeline for students, artists, organizations and cultural practitioners emerging from the pandemic. Never before in our city’s history have we needed art more and while the sector is vital, it is also vulnerable. The arts have a huge impact on the economic and emotional health of a community and will help Sacramento connect and heal as the effects of the pandemic still linger. The arts help engage communities in change and create a space for public dialogue. This additional support of the Office of Arts & Culture will help facilitate the ongoing partnership between the city and Sacramento’s arts and cultural practitioners. Together, we will increase the economic vitality of the city as we partner with you to stimulate investments and boost tourism. Thank you for approving this budget and protecting, investing and building Sacramento’s creative future.
As Founding Executive Director of Friends of Sacramento Arts, a board member of the Sacramento Alliance for Regional Arts and a 36-year resident of District 3, I want to thank you for the proposed 2023-24 budget for the Office of Arts and Culture. I ask you to support the programming priorities of the Office of Arts & Culture, which include:
• Supporting the arts and cultural nonprofits who are core creative drivers of community, economic and personal well-being through additional investment in the Cultural Arts Awards grant program and professional development programming.
• Sustaining the growth in film and media production in the region through investments in the film incentive program, marketing and outreach activities and the successful Film + Media Internship program.
• Expanding grassroots, neighborhood based creative programming and activations, through the Sacramento arts and culture match program and advancement of a more robust cultural facilities strategy.
Thank you for our commitment to a thriving arts and culture economy and an investment in our City. -- Allison Cagley, Executive Director, Friends of Sacramento Arts
As executive director of CLARA and a board member of Sacramento Alliance for Regional Arts, I want to commend the City for including $1.5M of new funding to support the arts in the 23/24 budget. Arts are essential for the health and wellbeing of our entire community, but local arts organizations (including music venues) are a significant local employer, and drive significant revenue to bars, restaurants, parking structures, and other essential industries in our city. A healthy arts economy is a healthy overall economy, and I am proud that our city has recognized this in their budgetary priorities. Thank you. -- Megan Wygant, Executive Director, CLARA / Board member, Sacramento Alliance for Regional Arts
