In 1994, the Sacramento cemetery was long-neglected, forgotten by the City it had served. Volunteers came, and with great respect, began restoration, re-planting things the originators knew and loved. Monuments were repaired and reset, surrounds repaired bringing history to life.
People came there to learn, to find peace. Visitors came from around the world. Rosarians of world-wide reputation have contributed to the care of the gardens.
Similar efforts elsewhere are respected -- celebrated. Look to Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA: https://www.hollywoodcemetery.org/ .
Now, the City is destroying this place of history and beauty.
Horticulturally -- historically, what is taking place is wrong. The harsh pruning this past winter was bad enough. That it continues is horrifying.
As a rosarian and lover of history – I ask you to stop. This is wrong. Some of it irreparable. Please STOP.

Hello I am a Northern California resident very concerned about the status of the historic rose garden and its current maintenance methods . I’ve heard that pruning had been done during the heat of summer and that concerns me. I had a relative try to prune some of my roses at the end of July this year which resulted in a loss of such roses from the heat and stress on the shrubs. Many of these old roses do not respond well to extensive pruning, and that coupled along with heat can negatively impact them.I regularly drive to Sacramento just to visit the rose garden and I think it would be a great loss for the city should it succumb to improper care practices.
