35. Approval of Concept Plans for Broadway Complete Streets Project (T15175300) and Approval of Addendum to Central City Specific Plan Environmental Impact Report File ID: 2019-01371
My family supports making Broadway more bike and pedestrian friendly. We have avoided biking much of Broadway with our children due to lack of safety precautions. Very much looking forward to an improved Broadway.
I am writing in support of the Broadway Complete Streets project. My family resides in Land Park, and we are frequent travelers on Broadway by car, bike and foot. As a nearly lifelong Land Park resident, I am excited at the prospect of Broadway becoming a safer and more user friendly destination for all types of users. In addition to residing in Land Park, we work on and frequent the midtown grid, and are excited about the prospect of strengthening the intersections that connect the neighborhoods. It will allow us to use our bikes with our children, something we have not felt comfortable with in the past. Thank you to city staff for bringing this opportunity forward.
I strongly support the Broadway Complete Streets Project. With the new housing and businesses opening up on Broadway, the city should also ensure that this street is safe for residents, commuters, and visitors to these homes, restaurants, and stores. I commute to work by bicycle across Broadway on a regular basis and have noticed that it is difficult and unsafe at many of the intersections. Future improvements to all of our streets should take into account the fact that Sacramento is a great city to bike and walk, and create safe environments for these people using our streets—the ones who are much more vulnerable to injuries from collisions than the drivers in their cars.
As a resident of Upper Land Park for the past three years, I strongly support the Broadway Complete Streets Project. Currently, Broadway is not safe for people walking or bicycling. I have nearly been hit by cars many times when walking to catch my bus to work or bicycling on Broadway to get to a restaurant on the corridor. Most of my neighbors will not walk or bike on the corridor, and end up getting in their cars to go elsewhere, instead of spending money on Broadway. The Complete Streets Project will change that- when people feel safe, and have comfortable facilities to bike and walk to the many great businesses on Broadway, the corridor will see more business.
As a Land Park resident, and someone who has walked, bicycled, and taken transit on the Broadway corridor since 1987, I am in strong support of the Broadway Complete Streets Project. The project provides a safe, comfortable connection for people traveling east/west by foot and bicycle, where one does not currently exist. For the many vulnerable road users who use Broadway daily (low-income/transit-dependent people, youth, older adults, persons with disabilities), this project will be a true change for the better. This project has been needed for the 30 plus years I have used the corridor, and demonstrates the City's commitment to providing safe, connected, comfortable facilities for all roadway users.
As an Upper Land Park resident, I have found that Broadway is not pedestrian or bike-friendly. I ride my bike to work nearly every day, and I often feel unsafe cycling on Broadway around 9th St and Riverside (having to be next to vehicles on many mornings). I have wished there was more infrastructure upgrades and improvements to allow safer walking and cycling along Broadway. I fully support the Concept Plans for Broadway Complete Streets Project (T15175300) and urge the Sacramento City Council to approve the concept plans and the addendum to the Central City Specific Plan EIR. I work in the public health sector, specifically including addressing climate change, transportation planning, physical activity, and more. Complete streets are one important strategy to make our built environments safer, encourage physical activity (which has substantial health benefits, helping to reduce chronic diseases), and help shift away from driving to increased use of active transport modes. Thank you!
As a resident of Land Park and as the mother of two active children attending Land Park schools, I wanted to express my support the concept plans for the Broadway Complete Streets project. I commend the good work our city planners and engineers have done to date to make sure that Broadway becomes a premier destination where people of all ages and abilities can feel safe walking and biking while visiting the existing and future restaurants, shops, and other small businesses. Thanks for making sure that all residents of Land Park are represented in this discussion!
Cheers,
Victoria Custodio, Sacramento Resident since 2003
